This walk follows the track of the old Braintree to Bishops Stortford railway line, now named the ‘Flitch Way’. The majority of this walk follows part of one of Britain’s national cycle routes. After clearing the suburbs of Braintree, the route goes through pretty countryside. There is little in the way of road walking until you reach Great Dunmow and the route is predominantly flat, with only a couple of gentle inclines/descents. It makes a good wet weather walk, as the majority of the route is firm under foot and well drained.
Starts at Braintree Rail Station – Grid Reference TL 761227 – which is the terminus of the Liverpool Street to Braintree line and finishes in the High Street of Great Dunmow – Grid reference TL 629217 – to the west of Braintree, from where you take the number 42A bus back to Chelmsford (on the Ipswich/Colchester to London Liverpool Street railway line).
Use OS Explorer Map number 195; alternatively Landranger Map number 167.
Going: Easy Distance: Approx. 9 miles (14.4 Km).
Pubs: There are a number of pubs at the end of the walk in Great Dunmow.
