This walk along the Stour Valley Path, between the village of Bures in Essex and the town of Sudbury, just over the Suffolk border, starts of flat by following the River Stour valley and then cuts across a number of valleys, where it becomes a lot more varied and scenic. There is a minimum of road walking, but the number of the ascents/descents are more numerous and, on a few occasions, steeper than on many of the other walks.
Starts at Bures Rail Station – Grid Reference TL 903339 – which is on the Marks Tey (on the London Liverpool Street to Ipswich/Colchester/Lowestoft main line) to Sudbury branch line and finishes at Sudbury Rail Station – Grid reference TL 877410 – one stop up the line from Bures. Note that, outside peak times, there is only one train per hour in each direction on this line.
Use OS Explorer Map number 196; alternatively, use OS Landranger Map 155.
Going: Moderate (a number of hills) Distance: Approx. 7.1 miles (11.4 Km), including visit to centre of Sudbury - a longer version of the walk (approx. 9 miles) is also described
