This route combines a walk along the River Chelmer, starting in Chelmsford, with the woods, open common land and fine views in and around the pretty village of Danbury. The first section is relatively flat, but the route gets hilly when you circle and cross through Danbury, which is located at the top of a hill. There is a minimum of road walking involved.
Use OS Explorer Map 183; alternatively, OS Landranger Map 167.
This walk commences near the centre of Chelmsford (Grid reference: TL 706069) - we use the 100 bus (140 bus on Sundays) that travels from Billericay to Chelmsford and the route description is based on this, but you could equally start from Chelmsford rail station. The walk ends in Danbury (Grid reference TL 780052), from which you can catch either the 31, 31X or 36 buses back to Chelmsford.
Going: Flat at first but hilly thereafter, with many ascents and descents – none of which are difficult (Moderate)
Distance: Approximately 7.5 miles (12 Km).
Pubs: There are pubs in Danbury - see Walk Details.
Old Barnes Mill, East of Chelmsford
