Starting in Chelmsford the route follows the River Chelmer out east, before joining the ‘Centenary Circle’, circling Chelmsford from the east to the south. The walk ends in the village of Galleywood.
Use OS Explorer Maps 175 & 183; alternatively, OS Landranger Map 167. Note that the ‘on the ground’ way-marked route for the Centenary Circle does not match that on the OS Map in places.
This is one of the few walks that uses buses rather than the railway system. It commences near the centre of Chelmsford (Grid reference: TL 706069) - we use the 100 bus (140 bus on Sundays) that travels from Billericay to Chelmsford and the route description is based on this, but you could equally start from Chelmsford rail station. The walk ends in Galleywood (Grid reference TL 705025), again on the 100/140 bus route.
Going: Mostly flat, with a few hilly sections, none of which are steep (Moderate)
Distance: Approximately 8 miles (12.8 Km)
Pubs: There are pubs in Sandon village and Galleywood - see Walk Details.
