This walk starts in Chelmsford and soon joins the ‘Centenary Circle’, circling Chelmsford from the west to the South. The latter part of the walk then follows St Peter’s way into the pretty village of Stock. Although it involves a little road walking, it is a pretty and varied walk. Many parts of the walk can be muddy after rain. Note also that the Centenary Circle part of the walk is only sporadically way-marked / signed.
Use OS Explorer Maps 175 & 183; alternatively, OS Landranger Map 167.
This is one of the few walks that uses buses rather than the railway system. It commences near the centre of Chelmsford (Grid reference: TL 706069) - we use the 100 bus (140 bus on Sundays) that travels from Billericay to Chelmsford and the route description is based on this, but you could equally start from Chelmsford rail station. The walk ends in Stock (Grid reference: Grid Reference TQ 690990), again on the 100/140 bus route. It is possible to cut the walk short at Galleywood after travelling for around two-thirds of the route. We have also included a walk variation, cutting out Galleywood.
Going: Mostly flat, with some hilly sections near Galleywood and Stock (Moderate)
Distance: Approximately 9.7 miles (15.5 Km)
Pubs: There are pubs in Writtle, Galleywood and Stock - see Walk Details.
