This circular walk is based on Chipping Ongar, located to the west of Chelmsford. It provides pleasant views across the local countryside from several high-points along its route, takes in part of the Essex Way long distance footpath and visits two distinctive churches. It involves a small amount of road walking.
Use OS Explorer Map 183; alternatively, OS Landranger Map 167.
This walk commences and ends near The Two Brewers Pub at the south end of Chipping Ongar High Street (Grid reference TL 551026), which is served by the 501 bus from Brentwood Rail Station (or the 32 bus from Chelmsford Rail Station – note that this bus does not run as frequently as the 501).
Going: The walk is undulating, with no steep climbs or descents (Easy)
Distance: Approximately 7.5 miles (12 Km).
Site to See: St. Andrews Church, Greensted - the oldest wooden church in the country, with walls that were built in the 11th-century and a white, wood-paneled Stuart tower.
Pubs: There are several pubs in Chipping Ongar and one in Toot Hill.
